Preparing for therapy
What to say in therapy when you do not know how to explain yourself
Therapy does not require a polished story. You can begin with what made you book, what daily life feels like now or what you are afraid will happen if nothing changes.
Begin with the booking moment
Describe the day or repeated pattern that made support feel necessary. That moment often gives a therapist a clearer starting point than trying to summarise your whole life.
Say what is difficult to say
It is acceptable to begin: ‘There is something I find embarrassing or confusing, and I am not ready to explain all of it yet.’ Naming the difficulty is already useful information.
Ask how the process works
You can ask about confidentiality, goals, frequency, approach and what happens if the fit feels wrong. A first session is also a chance for you to understand the therapist and decide what you need.
