Preparing for therapy
How to prepare for your first therapy session when you do not know where to start
You do not need a perfect story or the right diagnosis before therapy. A few concrete notes can help you describe what has been happening and what you hope might change.
Write the reason you booked
Complete one sentence: ‘I decided to seek help because…’ It can be an event, a repeating feeling, a relationship pattern or simply the sense that coping alone is no longer working.
Notice impact, not just symptoms
Record how the problem affects sleep, work, relationships, appetite, concentration or safety. Concrete effects help a therapist understand urgency and where support may begin.
Bring questions and boundaries
You can ask how sessions work, what confidentiality means and what approach the therapist uses. You may also say when a topic feels too difficult to discuss immediately.
