Anxiety & sleep

Can’t sleep because of anxiety? Give the worry somewhere to wait

An anxious mind often treats bedtime as the last chance to prevent tomorrow’s problems. The goal is not perfect calm; it is to stop doing tomorrow’s work in bed.

TalkToMe is self-guided educational support. It is not therapy, diagnosis or emergency care. If you may be in immediate danger in the UK, call 999 or go to A&E.

Write the worry in one sentence

Use the form: ‘I am worried that…’ Then add whether there is any useful action available tonight. If there is not, write the first time tomorrow when you will return to it.

Remove one physical signal

Lower light, move the phone farther away or relax the effort in your jaw and shoulders. One quieter signal can help more than trying to force your entire body to relax.

Rest still counts

Telling yourself that the night is ruined increases pressure. Resting without sleeping is not the same as failure. If sleeplessness continues or seriously affects daily life, speak with a healthcare professional.
